Generally speaking there are 2 different tool kits. The early (short wheel base (SWB)) tool kit (1965-1968) and the later (long wheel base (LWB)) toolkit (1969-1973), although there are variations among these two groups as well. Some tools are the same across all years (1965-1973). The midyear 1973 tool kit stands alone.
The 1965-1968 TOOL KIT contained many tools found in the late 356 cars, they are relatively rare and accordingly expensive.
The 1969-1973 TOOL KIT changed the screwdriver set from Klein to 10,000 Volt and no longer contained the Mesko tire guage, there a couple other changes as well. They are much more commonly available and much less expensive.
The MIDYEAR 1973 TOOL KIT changed the screwdriver set to a single handled version with a reversible slot and philips shaft and the five open-end wrenches now stated "SELECTED SPECIAL STEEL", there a couple other changes as well. They are relatively rare and accordingly expensive.
